Contrary to what many people believe,  radio announcers with the exception of a few, do not make alot of money and I do not consider myself an exception…with that said I find it necessary to live on a budget and in these belt tightening times here are some foods you can buy on your next trip to the grocery store that’ll save on your bill.  Let me start with eggs,  potatoes.  apples, bananas, wild rice, broccoli, spinach and carrots…..take a little extra time to shop around and you can eat healthy and still stay within your budget.  Lee

brianna.jpg

Awwww! This is Brianna!  She’s a 2 month old Retriever mix that needs a home!  She’s spade and everything!  Just $89.00 from the Greenville Humane Society.  864-242-3626.  Watch video of Brianna above.

Now, listen up!  There is something very special going on this weekend at the Greenville Humane Society… an

ADOPT-A-THON!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday (11/1-11/3) all day the adopt-a-thon will be happening.  That means prices will be dramatically dropped for adoptions.  So… essentially, if you would like to wait and adopt Brianna on Friday, you can get her for less than $89.00… that’s if she’s not snatched up before then!

Also, get the kids all dressed up for the adopt-a-thon!  Bring the kids in costume for a little Trick-or-Treating!  The Greenville Humane Society is located on Furman Hall Road in Greenville.  Phone at 864-242-3626.

tink.jpg

(This is a picture of my dog Tink.  She’s a Lab mix that my husband and I got from the Greenville Humane Society.  She is such a great dog!)

Paws for a Cause Dog Walk to benefit the American Cancer Society is coming up this Saturday, 11/1/08.  It’s a one mile dog walk at Cleveland Park in Greenville.  It’s not too late to register!  Come by at 8:30am this Saturday to get registered!

Well, I say all that to give you some background info.  You see, I know it’s going to be quite cold this Saturday morning… especially for my little Daisy, she’s a Chihauhau.  7 pounds of bones and a little bit of skin.  She gets cold so easily, so I went to PetsMart and bought her a sweater for this Saturday morning.  (I spent more money on this sweater for Daisy than I do for myself…. if she’ll let me, I can borrow it and may be put it on as an ankle warmer :)

Now, Daisy doesn’t have a lot of patience for trying on clothes.  Come to think of it, Daisy doesn’t have a lot of patience for anything, except of course when you are totally focused on taking care of her needs, like a good back scratch.  Even then if you scratch to hard she’ll get ya.  But I tell you what, she sure does have a beatiful smile!  Watch the video below and see how appreciative this little, lovable monstrosity is!

Didn’t want to leave Tink out!  She’s my lab mix, pictured above, and she’ll be coming to PFAC this Saturday too!

journey.jpg    Okay, so I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to, in its’ entirety, the brand new album by Journey, Revelation.  It starts out with an 80’s feel…and then more of an 80’s feel… it’s 2008!

Arnel Pineda is fantastic, beautiful singer… but the album overall, not a fan.  I have to admit I set my expectations much too high.  “After All These Years,” track 6 is the best song on the album.  I also liked track 8, “What I Needed.”  And that’s it.

Sorry to disappoint, but I myself was disappointed.  I do want to see more from Journey…hopefully they’ll take some more time and try and come up with another sound.

weekend.jpg

Got any plans for the weekend?  It’s gonna get back up to alm0st 70 degrees again!  South Carolina weather never ceases to amaze me.  Being from Maryland, when the weather turned cold, it stayed cold… only to get colder!

I was in CVS this morning, talking with one of the ladies behind the counter, both of us are from the north, and I told her I really wanted a good snow this year.  Just one, one big blizzard that takes over the Upstate.  Don’t scream at me… and no, I am not moving back north.  I have a great job and great friends here, that is why Old Man Winter needs to come visit the Upstate, especially when he’s in a bad mood!

I’m just throwing out some random thoughts here.  I think this weekend I am going to try and put together a collage of photos from the Radiothon at Children’s Hospital.  My Dad was so excited to be part of the Radiothon!

I think I would like to see Saw V.  Not sure yet.  I don’t want another dissappointment.  Saw I was so good… and then it just kinda went downhill from there.

Oh, I have to get candy for the kids.  Shoot, I keep forgetting!  but I also need to get ready for Paws For A Cause Dog Walk November 1st at Cleveland Park in Greenville.  Remember, it’s only $30 and benefits our local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

I am actually going out this weekend!  Monnie and I are gonna meet up for some good jazz music at Brown Street Jazz.  Good food, good music and good times.  Very nice.

Have a great weekend everybody!

greenville-humane-society.jpg

This is my favorite day of the week because… Greenville Humane Society comes in with adoptees!!!  Check out the video above to introduce yourself and find out who needs a good home this week!

Greenville Humane Society        864-242-3626

Greenville Humane Society is a special organization.  And keep in mind, a NON-PROFIT organization.  All services and products you purchase from GHS, and ofcourse adoptions, allows for the continuation of this wonderful pet shelter.

Greenville Humane Society has wonderful prices on Frontline!  I just bought a 3 month supply for my Tink and it was only $35.50 plus tax!

Wonderful prices on vaccines!  Every TUESDAY, GHS hosts a Vaccine Clinic from 5:30pm-7:30pm walk-ins only.  Vaccinations are $10 each.  Basic vaccincations offered include rabies, distemper, bordetella, deworming, heartworm and flea preventative and micro-chipping.  NOT KIDDING HERE!  Micro-chipping is $10!!!

One other thing to keep in mind, animals need to be vaccinated annually according to South Carolina State laws.  puppies and kittens 6 weeks and older need a series of initial vaccinations.

I know all of us were touched by the stories shared during our Radiothon for Greenville Hospital System’s Children’s Hospital, October 9th-11th.  I am still overwhelmed by the warm extending arms of our community.  Thank you so very much… 210,000 plus thank yous, as we continue to make miracles happen at Children’s Hospital.

Felicity was the one baby girl that really tugged at my heart.  She was born very premature, coming into this world at 1.1 lbs.  Her parents, Jeremy and Stefanie, were at Children’s Hopital while we broadcasted.  They came down and shared Felicity with us, opened up about their fears, joy and faith.  Just a tremendous time for all of us!

For those 3 days, everybody wanted updates about Felicity.  Every day was a 24 hour test.  Would we see improvements in Felicity’s health?  Would we see her to grow and grow and gain weight every day?

Today, (I am gonna cry), today I am so happy to share with you that Felicity is still with us!!!  She is still hanging on, albeit a struggle, she is still here!  She’s in the NICU and doctors and nurses are still watching her closely, and Jeremy and Stefanie are still staying at the Ronald McDonald house until they can take their little girl home.

You and I are providing room for Jeremy and Stefanie through our donations.  The magnitude of all who contributed during our Radiothon, I can’t put into words.  The dollars go to sustaining lives, giving parents a comfortable place to stay, equipment, plays areas… and no child is ever turned away.  Thank God.

I am going on and on and on.  I just wanted you to know that Felicity is still here and desparately needs your thoughts and prayers as do her parents Jeremy and Stefanie.  We all want to see Felicity strong and healthy and home!

Click here to see Jeremy share Felicity with us during the Radiothon.  In the video player, go down to “Jeremy Hill shares his daughter”  This interview was videotaped while Jermey was on live with Hawk and Tom from B93.7.

grass.jpg  Remember a couple weeks ago I shared with you that my neighbor emailed me at work… not to tell me that she was getting married…  no, she emailed to ask if I could get her grass, because….

I thought it was funny/cute at the time, b/c planning a wedding and then actually getting through the ceremony and then the reception and being whisked away to paradise can rob your attention from remembering to cut the grass!  She offered to pay, but I declined.  My wedding present to her!

Well, I have not heard from her since her marriage and her honeymoon.  Unless she is on a 3 week honeymoon…

Well, I am not sure if when she asked me to cut her grass, she thought that I would continue to cut it for her.  She just asked me to do that job while she was away.  Well, it’s been a couple of weeks and I certainly had to cut my grass.  Then I looked over in her yard, just a jungle.  As far as I know she hasn’t been back to her house since the wedding.  I have to assume that she moved in to her (now) husbands house.  So what do you think I did?

Hmmm, should I continue to cut the grass or let it go?  I do think that it was very nice of me to go ahead and cut her lawn, a second time, even though she didn’t ask a second time.  I don’t have her phone number or email address to talk to her about her lawn.  I guess I could send her a letter and it will be forwarded to her new address ;)

Your input would be appreciated.  You can email me at  sbartro at entercom.com

homeless-person.jpg       stray-cat.jpg

It amazes me that people can be so hurtful and hateful to each other, but be so kind and loving to creatures.  Albeit, there are those human beings that are both hurtful to others and creatures.  How can someone kick a cat or dog?  Why would you do that?  Why would you purposely plot to cause pain to another person?  It just stupifies me.

The reason I share this, I read about a Mayor in Auckland, New Zealand who told the city’s homeless that they have just as much right to live in the city as stray cats.  Council officials wanted to look into “moving along” these homeless people.

But people of the city would do anything they could to take care of strays running through the community.  Maybe not giving them a home, but making sure their little tummies were full.  What the Mayor said that really displayed his compassion for people and animals is this:  “Companion animals in this city and all creatures have as much right to live in this city as we do, so every creature needs to be treated with respect and dignity.”

We don’t how those homeless got to where they are today, but b/c they are less fortunate than me, I’m gonna treat them as less fortunate?  No, I don’t think so.

Meet Trevor!  (watch the video above)  He’s ready to go home from the Greenville Humane Society.  He is 2 months old, Boxer/Hound mix and just a lovable piece of puppy!  Just a great demeanor.  AND if Trevor isn’t enough, you want more than just Trevor… he has 3 brothers and sisters!  Trevor and siblings have been fixed so you won’t have to worry about that down the line.  To adopt Trevor, or more, call the Greenville Humane Society at 864-242-3626.
